From research: How is Europe changing its view on energy security in relation to Russia?

Our research team persists in exploring the current topic of European energy security and its relation to Russia. Europe’s energy relationship with Russia has changed significantly from 2014 to 2022 due to geopolitical tensions. DUBSKÝ and TICHÝ (2024) published a study in The Extractive Industries and Society journal, analysing the European Commission’s discourse on energy security towards Russia in this period.

The European Commission’s discourse contains three main narratives: the securitization narrative, which portrays energy dependence on Russia as a threat; the geopolitics narrative views Russia as a great power rival in the context of energy; and the zero-sum game narrative highlights opposing interests between the EU and Russia, complicating long-term energy cooperation.

Through these narratives, the European Commission reassesses the EU energy security, dependence, and the necessity for diversification away from Russian energy supplies. Find more information and discussion at: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S2214790X23001806?via%3Dihub
